Sylvia Brooks Greer
Artist's Statement:
All media inspires me to create. My desire is to create new artworks from ready-made materials: my torn-up paintings, laddered pantyhose, rusty metal found in the street, a knitted sampler. As an artist, I put these "used" materials into a new context, designed to intrigue and to provoke thought. Combining ideas from several cultures, I rearrange them in a newer context -- a format of color, pattern, texture, and energy.

Artist's Statement:
Since childhood, I have always been fascinated by fabrics -- fabric construction, as well as fabric collecting. Through my father, a native of Guatemala, I became acquainted with ethnic textiles and handweaving. My mother, a tailor, instilled me with an enthusiasm for designing and creating garments. I had my first weaving and textile class in high school, but it was not until much later that I purchased a loom -- I now own three looms.
